King James Version (KJV)
18Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
19But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:
Peter speaks of believers being redeemed from an empty former way of life. Salvation is deliverance from bondage so that a person may belong to God.
Silver and gold are valuable, yet they are corruptible and powerless to remove sin. No material possession or human achievement can purchase redemption.
Jesus is the Lamb without blemish and without spot. Because He was sinless, His blood could be the sufficient price for guilty people.
The value of redemption is measured by its price: the precious blood of Christ. That truth gives believers both assurance of God’s love and a new reason to live for Him.
The passage also redirects trust away from money, tradition, and inherited religion. Salvation rests in Jesus Christ and what He gave, not in what we can offer.
