16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
What This Passage Teaches
All Scripture Is Given by Inspiration of God
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God.” Scripture did not begin with the insight or ambition of men. It is breathed out by God Himself, and that is why it carries His authority. The word “all” leaves no part of it to be set aside as merely human.
Profitable for Doctrine
“Profitable for doctrine.” Scripture teaches what is true about God, about ourselves, and about salvation. Doctrine is not an optional interest for the studious; it is the foundation on which a believer stands, and God has given His word to supply it.
Profitable for Reproof and Correction
“For reproof, for correction.” Scripture shows us where we are wrong and then sets us right. Reproof exposes the error; correction restores what has gone astray. Both are acts of care, and both require a standard outside ourselves.
Profitable for Instruction in Righteousness
“For instruction in righteousness.” Beyond correcting what is wrong, Scripture trains us in what is right. It forms the ongoing pattern of a believer’s life — not only rescuing from error, but teaching how to walk before God day after day.
That the Believer May Be Throughly Furnished
“That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.” Here is the purpose of the whole verse. “Perfect” carries the sense of complete, and “throughly furnished” means fully equipped. Scripture is sufficient to prepare God’s people for every good work He calls them to.
Why It Matters
This passage is why Scripture, rather than opinion or preference, is the foundation of everything offered here. If God breathed out His word, then it carries an authority no teacher, tradition, or personal conviction can match, and it is to be received rather than edited.
It also sets a realistic expectation for the Christian life. Scripture is not given only for comfort; it is given to teach, to reprove, to correct, and to train. The believer who submits to all four uses is the one God equips — not partially, but throughly — for every good work.
