22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

What This Passage Teaches

Fruit Produced by the Spirit

These qualities are called the fruit of the Spirit because they grow from His work within a believer. They are not a costume for outward religion, but evidence of inward life.

One Fruit with Many Qualities

Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance belong together. The Spirit shapes the whole character of a person, not only the traits that come naturally.

Character Consistent with God’s Law

“Against such there is no law.” These qualities do not violate God’s righteous standard; they display the kind of life toward which His commands point.

Why It Matters

Spiritual maturity is seen in character, not merely in knowledge, activity, or spiritual language. This list gives believers a practical way to examine whether their lives are being shaped by the Holy Spirit.

Fruit grows through abiding dependence, not hurried performance. As believers walk in the Spirit and submit to God’s Word, He steadily forms the character of Christ in them.
