King James Version (KJV)
22And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
Under the old covenant, blood was central to the cleansing God prescribed. Those sacrifices taught that sin brings death and that forgiveness is costly.
Remission means forgiveness or release from guilt. God is holy and does not pretend sin is harmless; His justice must be satisfied.
The surrounding chapter explains that the sacrifices of the law anticipated the better sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who offered Himself once to put away sin.
This verse helps explain the cross. Jesus did not die merely as an example of love; He gave His life as the sacrifice sinners needed and could never provide for themselves.
Forgiveness is free to the believer, but it was not cheap. It rests on the precious blood of Christ and gives every reason for gratitude, worship, and trust in His finished work.
