16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
What This Passage Teaches
God Loved the World
The verse begins with God’s love. His love reaches toward a world of people who need rescue; salvation begins with His heart and His initiative, not with our ability to earn His favor.
God Gave His Only Begotten Son
God’s love was demonstrated by what He gave. Jesus Christ is not merely a teacher sent with advice—He is the unique Son of God, given so that sinners could be saved through Him.
Whosoever Believeth in Him
The invitation is open to “whosoever.” To believe in Christ is to place your trust in Him—resting on who He is and what He accomplished rather than trusting your own goodness, works, or religion to save you.
Everlasting Life Instead of Perishing
The verse presents two outcomes. Apart from Christ, people perish; through faith in Him, they receive everlasting life. This life is God’s gift, begins with reconciliation to Him, and will never end.
Why It Matters
John 3:16 gathers the good news of the gospel into one sentence: God loved, God gave, and anyone who believes in His Son may receive everlasting life. The center of the verse is not what we achieve for God, but what God has done for us in Jesus Christ.
It is both an invitation and a warning. No one is excluded from the word “whosoever,” but the promise is specifically to the one who believes in Christ. The proper response is not merely to admire the verse, but to trust the Savior it reveals.
