How to Start a Gospel Conversation

You Don’t Need a Perfect Opening. You Need a Willing Heart.

Spiritual conversations can begin naturally. Jesus’ conversation with the woman at the well began in an ordinary setting and moved toward eternal truth. Listen carefully, care genuinely, and look for a natural opportunity to point someone toward Christ.

Begin With a Simple Question

  • “Did you grow up around church?”
  • “What do you think about Jesus?”
  • “Do you have any spiritual beliefs?”
  • “Have you ever read the Bible for yourself?”
  • “Would it be okay if I prayed for you?”

Then listen. Evangelism should include genuine conversation, not merely waiting for your turn to speak.

Bring the Conversation to Jesus

Explain our sin, Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, and God’s call to repent and believe. Your confidence rests in God’s Word, not your ability to win an argument.

Respond With Grace

If you do not know an answer, say, “I don’t know, but I’d like to find out what Scripture says.” Continue the conversation with humility, patience, truth, and love.

Your Great Commission Challenge

Think of one person you already know. Pray for them by name. Look for an opportunity to ask one spiritual question. Listen, love them, speak truth, share Christ, and trust God with what happens next.
