The Kingdom of God

How Is God’s Will Done in Heaven, and How Should It Be Done on Earth?

Study heaven’s willing obedience and worship, then follow Scripture’s call to do God’s will sincerely, wisely, and from the heart on earth.

Read first

Key Scriptures (KJV)

Read each passage in its surrounding chapter as you study.

“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

Matthew 6:10

“Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.”

Psalms 103:20-21

“Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;”

Ephesians 6:6

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Romans 12:2

Study the Word

What the passages teach

Each section separates the text’s direct teaching from explanation and personal response.

Part 1

Heaven’s servants listen and obey

Psalm 103:19-21; Daniel 7:9-10; Hebrews 1:14

Scripture says

Psalm 103 describes the LORD’s throne in heaven and His angels as servants who hearken to His word, do His commandments, and do His pleasure. Hebrews calls angels ministering spirits sent to serve God’s purposes.

Understanding

Matthew 6:10 does not explain every detail of heavenly life. Psalm 103 gives a clear pattern: God’s will is heard and carried out by His loyal servants.

Apply it

Receive God’s Word attentively and move from hearing to obedience instead of endlessly postponing what He has made clear.

Part 2

Heaven worships the Creator and the Lamb

Isaiah 6:1-3; Revelation 4:8-11; Revelation 5:9-14

Scripture says

Biblical visions of heaven show worship around God’s throne, declaring His holiness and worth and honoring the Lamb who redeemed people by His blood.

Understanding

God’s will is not done as cold compliance. The heavenly scenes join service with reverence, delight, and praise.

Apply it

Let obedience grow from worship. Remember who God is before treating His commands as mere tasks.

Part 3

On earth, God’s will should be done from the heart

Matthew 7:21; Ephesians 6:5-7; Colossians 3:22-24; James 1:22

Scripture says

Jesus distinguishes saying “Lord” from doing the Father’s will. Paul commands sincere service as unto Christ, and James commands believers to be doers of the word.

Understanding

The prayer asks for real obedience, not public appearance. “As it is in heaven” points toward willing, God-centered faithfulness.

Apply it

Do the next clear act of obedience when no audience is present, and reject “eyeservice” aimed mainly at human approval.

Part 4

Knowing God’s will requires renewed minds and Scripture-shaped wisdom

Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:15-17; Colossians 1:9-10; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Scripture says

Scripture names parts of God’s will directly, including sanctification, thanksgiving, and wise living. It also connects discernment with a renewed mind and spiritual understanding.

Understanding

God has not revealed every future decision in advance. His moral will is plainly taught; wise application grows through Scripture, prayer, counsel, and mature judgment.

Apply it

Begin with revealed commands. For decisions Scripture does not name, seek wisdom without pretending a preference is a direct word from God.

Reflect together

Discussion questions

  1. What does Psalm 103 explicitly say about the way angels serve God?
  2. Where am I tempted to practice eyeservice rather than obedience from the heart?
  3. Which part of God’s revealed will is already clear enough for me to obey?
  4. How can worship, Scripture, prayer, and wise counsel shape a decision before me?
