The Kingdom of God

What Does “Thy Kingdom Come” Mean?

Trace the kingdom announced by Jesus, its present work, its future completion, and what we ask when we pray for it to come.

Read first

Key Scriptures (KJV)

Read each passage in its surrounding chapter as you study.

“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

Matthew 6:10

“But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.”

Matthew 12:28

“Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”

Colossians 1:13

“And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”

Revelation 11:15

Study the Word

What the passages teach

Each section separates the text’s direct teaching from explanation and personal response.

Part 1

The kingdom is God’s reign, announced in Jesus

Matthew 3:1-2; Matthew 4:17, 23; Mark 1:14-15

Scripture says

John the Baptist and Jesus announce that the kingdom of heaven is at hand. Jesus preaches the gospel of the kingdom and calls people to repent and believe.

Understanding

“Kingdom” includes God’s active rule, not merely a location. The King’s arrival demands a response of repentance, faith, and allegiance.

Apply it

Receive Christ’s authority rather than treating the kingdom as an abstract future topic.

Part 2

The kingdom is already at work

Matthew 12:28; Luke 17:20-21; Colossians 1:13-14; Romans 14:17

Scripture says

Jesus says His works by the Spirit show that the kingdom has come. Paul says believers have been delivered from darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s Son.

Understanding

The kingdom is present wherever the King saves, frees, and rules His people. It is not reducible to an earthly political program or a merely inward feeling.

Apply it

Ask where Christ’s rule should change your loyalties, relationships, priorities, and response to evil today.

Part 3

The kingdom will come in open fullness

Matthew 25:31-34; 1 Corinthians 15:24-28; 2 Peter 1:11; Revelation 11:15; Revelation 21:1-5

Scripture says

Scripture looks ahead to the Son’s visible reign, resurrection victory, final judgment, and a renewed creation in which God dwells with His people.

Understanding

The prayer reaches beyond present spiritual growth. It longs for Christ’s return and the final defeat of sin, death, and every rival power.

Apply it

Pray with hope, endure faithfully, and let the promised future shape what you value in the present.

Part 4

Praying for the kingdom also offers our obedience

Matthew 6:10, 33; Matthew 28:18-20; 2 Peter 3:11-14

Scripture says

Jesus joins “Thy kingdom come” with “Thy will be done,” commands disciples to seek God’s kingdom first, and sends them to make disciples who obey His commands.

Understanding

This prayer is not passive. We ask God to advance His reign while yielding ourselves to His will and mission.

Apply it

Pray for the gospel to spread, for people to obey Christ, for justice and mercy consistent with His Word, and for your own life to come under His rule.

Reflect together

Discussion questions

  1. Which passages show the kingdom as present, and which point to its future completion?
  2. Where am I resisting the King’s authority in ordinary life?
  3. How should kingdom hope differ from trust in a political movement?
  4. Whom can I serve or tell about Jesus as I pray for His kingdom to come?
