What Does It Mean to Be Made in the Image of God?

Study what Genesis explicitly says, what the image means for human dignity and calling, and where interpretation should remain humble.

Read first

Key Scriptures (KJV)

Read each passage in its surrounding chapter as you study.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”

Genesis 1:26-27

“Whoso sheddeth man’s blood, by man shall his blood be shed: for in the image of God made he man.”

Genesis 9:6

“Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.”

James 3:9

“And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”

Colossians 3:10

Study the Word

What the passages teach

Each section separates the text’s direct teaching from explanation and personal response.

Part 1

God created both male and female in His image

Genesis 1:26-28; Genesis 5:1-2

Scripture says

Genesis states three times that humanity was created in God’s image and expressly includes male and female. The text joins the image with blessing, fruitfulness, stewardship, and dominion under God.

Understanding

The image is received from the Creator, not earned by ability, age, health, usefulness, ethnicity, wealth, or social standing.

Apply it

Treat women and men, the weak and strong, the unborn and aged, neighbors and enemies as lives that belong to God and may never be reduced to usefulness.

Part 2

The image still grounds dignity after the fall

Genesis 5:1-3; Genesis 9:6; James 3:9-10

Scripture says

After sin enters the world, Genesis 9 still grounds the seriousness of killing in God’s image, and James condemns cursing people made after God’s likeness.

Understanding

Sin profoundly corrupts human life, but Scripture continues to speak of people as bearing God’s image. We should not say the image was erased when later texts still appeal to it.

Apply it

Reject contempt, racism, abuse, dehumanizing speech, and violence. How we speak to people matters because they are not mere objects.

Part 3

Scripture does not give one exhaustive definition

Genesis 1:26-28; Psalm 8:4-8; Ecclesiastes 7:29

Scripture says

Genesis names the image and immediately describes humanity’s delegated rule. Other passages show humans as morally accountable, relational, rational, creative, and able to know and answer God, but no verse says the image is only one of those capacities.

Understanding

Christians have reasonably described the image in terms of representation, relationship, moral likeness, and calling. These are interpretations drawn from the whole witness of Scripture, not an inspired dictionary definition.

Apply it

Hold narrower theories with humility, especially when they would deny dignity to someone whose capacities are limited.

Part 4

Renewal in Christ restores likeness to the Creator

Colossians 1:15; Colossians 3:9-10; Ephesians 4:22-24; Romans 8:29

Scripture says

Christ is called the image of the invisible God. Believers put on the new man, are renewed after the Creator’s image, and are being conformed to the image of God’s Son.

Understanding

Jesus shows true humanity and perfect revelation of the Father. Redemption does more than affirm dignity; it renews people toward righteousness, holiness, knowledge, and Christlike character.

Apply it

Look to Christ to understand both who God is and what faithful human life should become, then practice truth, holiness, love, and stewardship.

Reflect together

Discussion questions

  1. What facts does Genesis 1 directly connect with God’s image?
  2. How do Genesis 9 and James 3 shape the way I treat and speak about other people?
  3. Where should I distinguish a helpful explanation from Scripture’s explicit wording?
  4. How does Christ reshape my understanding of human identity and purpose?
