What Does Scripture Say to Look for in a Wife?

A careful study of godly character, wisdom, shared faith, and the mutual responsibilities of a marriage covenant.

Read first

Key Scriptures (KJV)

Read each passage in its surrounding chapter as you study.

“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised.”

Proverbs 31:30

“House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD.”

Proverbs 19:14

“A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones.”

Proverbs 12:4

“The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.”

Study the Word

What the passages teach

Each section separates the text’s direct teaching from explanation and personal response.

Part 1

Fear of the Lord comes before appearance

Proverbs 31:10-31; Proverbs 31:30; 1 Peter 3:3-4

Scripture says

Proverbs praises the woman who fears the LORD. The same passage describes strength, diligence, wisdom, kindness, generosity, and faithful care for her household. First Peter directs attention to the heart rather than outward adornment alone.

Understanding

These passages present reverence for God and proven character as more durable foundations for marriage than charm or physical beauty by themselves.

Apply it

Look for a faith that is visible in truthful speech, kindness, wise decisions, service, and consistent conduct—not merely a Christian label.

Part 2

Wisdom and virtue bless a household

Proverbs 12:4; Proverbs 19:14; Proverbs 31:26-27

Scripture says

Scripture calls a virtuous woman a crown to her husband, calls a prudent wife a gift from the LORD, and praises the woman who speaks with wisdom and watches over her household.

Understanding

Biblical prudence is sound judgment shaped by God’s truth. Virtue is not flawlessness; it is a settled direction of integrity and faithfulness.

Apply it

Pay attention to how both of you handle truth, correction, responsibility, conflict, money, family, and care for other people over time.

Part 3

Shared allegiance to Christ matters

1 Corinthians 7:39; 2 Corinthians 6:14; Amos 3:3

Scripture says

First Corinthians expressly says that a believing widow who remarries is to marry “only in the Lord.” Second Corinthians warns believers against being unequally yoked with unbelievers, though that passage is not limited to marriage.

Understanding

Applying the unequal-yoke warning to marriage is an interpretation supported by marriage’s binding, shared direction; it should not be presented as though 2 Corinthians 6 discusses courtship specifically.

Apply it

Before marriage, talk plainly about the gospel, church life, prayer, obedience, children, money, and the direction in which each person intends to follow Christ.

Part 4

Marriage is a covenant of mutual faithfulness

Genesis 2:18, 24; Ephesians 5:21-33; 1 Peter 3:7

Scripture says

God made marriage as a one-flesh union. Scripture commands husbands to love sacrificially and honor their wives, and it addresses the responsibilities of both husband and wife.

Understanding

A biblical search for a wife is not a one-sided inspection. A man should ask whether he is becoming the kind of faithful, self-giving husband Scripture commands him to be.

Apply it

Seek counsel from mature believers, observe character over time, pray for wisdom, and refuse pressure to ignore serious patterns of deceit, control, violence, or spiritual manipulation.

Reflect together

Discussion questions

  1. Which qualities in Proverbs 31 describe worship and character rather than appearance or status?
  2. Am I evaluating spiritual fruit over time, or mainly responding to attraction and first impressions?
  3. How am I preparing to fulfill my own biblical responsibilities in marriage?
  4. Which trusted, mature believers can help us discern wisely and honestly?
