Who Was Nehemiah?
The cupbearer who became a prayerful builder.
Nehemiah served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes. When he heard that Jerusalem’s walls and gates were ruined, he wept, fasted, confessed sin, and prayed. The king noticed his sadness and granted permission, supplies, and protection for the journey. In Jerusalem, Nehemiah quietly inspected the walls before sharing his plan. Families worked side by side, while enemies mocked, threatened, and tried to distract them. Nehemiah prayed, posted guards, corrected injustice among the people, and refused to abandon the work. With God’s help, the wall was completed in fifty-two days.
