Unit 2 • God Leads His People

Deborah

Listening to God and leading with wisdom and courage

During a dangerous time, God raised up Deborah to judge Israel, speak His Word, and help lead His people toward freedom.

Who Was Deborah?

A prophetess and judge who led Israel wisely.

Deborah served as a prophetess and judge during the time before Israel had kings. People came to her beneath a palm tree for wise judgment. God gave Deborah a message for Barak: gather an army because the Lord would deliver Sisera’s forces. Barak asked Deborah to go with him, and she courageously agreed while making clear that victory belonged to God. The Lord threw the enemy army into confusion, and Israel was freed. Deborah and Barak then sang a song praising God and honoring those who willingly served.
