Unit 3 • Kings and Kingdoms

Elijah

Standing boldly for the one true God

Elijah spoke God’s truth during a dark time, depended on God’s daily provision, prayed boldly on Mount Carmel, and discovered God’s gentle care when he became exhausted and afraid.

Who Was Elijah?

The prophet who showed that the Lord alone is God.

Elijah served when King Ahab and Queen Jezebel promoted Baal worship in Israel. God sent Elijah to announce a drought, then cared for him by a brook and through a widow in Zarephath. On Mount Carmel, Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal, and God answered his prayer with fire. Soon afterward, Elijah fled in fear from Jezebel. God gave him rest, food, a gentle word, and a renewed mission. Elijah later trained Elisha and was taken to heaven in a whirlwind.
