Who Was Mordecai?
A faithful guardian and wise counselor.
Mordecai was a Jewish man living in Susa who raised his younger cousin Esther after her parents died. He continued caring for her after she entered the palace. Mordecai overheard a plot against the king and reported it, but his loyal act was initially forgotten. He later refused to bow before Haman, whose pride turned into hatred against all Jewish people. When Haman’s decree was announced, Mordecai mourned and urged Esther to act. At exactly the right time, the king remembered Mordecai’s faithful service. After Haman’s plot failed, Mordecai was promoted and helped write a new decree protecting the Jewish people.
